Over time I've used different tools to produce the picture pages, so there are various formats. Someday maybe I'll clean things up to make all the galleries consistent. Sure, right after the Northwest Passage becomes free of ice. Hmmm...

Click on the picture representing the gallery of interest, and you'll see a new window.

Enjoy.

Brad's Wedding 2007

Our nephew, Brad Giles, changed his life a few weeks ago by marrying Nilma Sousa. The entire Heling clan converged to help wish the happy couple well. The New Hampshire weather surprised everyone by being downright spectacular, and we all had a great time. Congratulations, Brad and Nilma!!

New Zealand 2007

This year the big trip is New Zealand with the Friendship Force. We spent sixteen days in February exploring the South Island and getting to know Kiwis in Christchurch and Dunedin. Click on the sheep to the left to see the scenics.

The people we met, both Kiwis and Friendship Force folks from Atlanta and other chapters are in a separate gallery.

Our host in Dunedin, Bryan Evans, is quite the gardener (as well as an accomplished cook -- which we appreciated mightily), so I had to put up a few images from his garden.

Costa Rica 2006

Natalie and I just returned from a 17-day trip to Costa Rica with the Friendship Force, an association that promotes international understanding through homestays. Since we latched onto a tour sponsored by the South Jersey chapter, we got to meet lots of new people from two foreign countries: Costa Rica and New Jersey. We had a great time; hope you enjoy the pictures.

Linda and Charles get hitched

We had a great time at Charles and Linda's wedding in Port Orchard, Washington. The location was spectacular, Linda had arranged for perfect weather, and the company was wonderful.

Scott Giles' Graduation

Our nephew and intrepid naval aviator, Scott Giles, received his Master's degree from the Stanford Aeronautics and Astronautics department on June 12, 2005. Friends and family gathered to congratulate him and generally have a good time.

Taiwan

We spent almost three weeks in Asia, starting with a week in Taiwan to visit Andrew, who is spending a year there teaching English. We joined the teeming masses in Taipei for half the week and escaped to a park called Taroko Gorge for the remaining time.

UC Santa Cruz Bike Race

Our nephew Scott Giles is taking a year's break from his career as a naval aviator to work toward a Master's degree at Stanford. As part of his program to retain his sanity, Scott is staying in shape by racing with the Stanford cycling team. I got to exercise my shutter release finger muscles at a recent race on the UC Santa Cruz campus.

Redwood National and State Parks, NW California

As part of a recent trip to southwest Oregon to visit our friends, Sig and Diane Dekany, we took in parts of the Redwood National and State Parks. In particular, Jedediah Smith and Prairie Creek state parks are treasures for hiking and wildlife viewing.

Austria

Part of our trip to Europe in July 2004. We started out in Salzburg, then traveled south through the ski area around Schladming, and then on to the southern province of Corinthia (around Klagenfurt) where we found some of my (Ivan's) relatives. After visiting Venice and the Cinque Terre region of Italy, we returned to Austria to visit Innsbruck and the Pinzgau region.

Venice

You have to see Venice. Even though it's been a tourist trap for four hundred years, and very expensive, it's unique.

Italy's Cinque Terre Region

The five villages of the Cinque Terre have to constitute one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Seeing the villages built into the mountainsides, fronting on the crystal-clear water of the sea is a feast for the eyes. Oh, and the food...

Grambling

Grambling State came to town for a football game with SJSU on August 23. The game was something of a bust, what with the Tigers knuckling under to State 29 to zip. The Grambling marching band was a whole other kettle of fish. They claim to be the best band in the land, and I didn't see anything that would contradict that statement. The drum line showed up in downtown SJ for a rally Thursday night, and I got a few photos of their show as well as that of a local martial arts demo team.

Maritime Museum

Through the good offices of Don and Bev Emery, we had the opportunity to spend a night in a brand new hotel in San Francisco, right on Fisherman's Wharf. In addition to playing tourist and eating too much, we and the Emerys spent some time at the Maritime Museum.
